This week,Mrs. Mast's Class embarked on an exciting journey into the world of paleontology by creating our own mold and cast fossils! Through hands-on learning, students gained a deeper understanding of how fossils are formed and what they tell us about ancient life. They began by using clay to create molds. Students carefully pressed various dinosaur skeletons, into the clay, leaving behind detailed imprints. These imprints represented the "mold" – the hollow space left behind by a buried organism. Next, They prepared a "casting" material by carefully pouring Elmer's glue into the molds. As the glue dried and hardened, it filled the empty space, creating a solid replica of the original object. Once dry, these glue casts were carefully removed from the clay molds, revealing detailed three-dimensional fossils. This activity allowed students to visualize the process of fossilization, demonstrating how organisms can leave behind impressions in sediment that later harden into rock. By creating both molds and casts, students experienced firsthand how paleontologists study fossils to reconstruct the shapes and forms of ancient creatures and plants.

A huge congratulations to our amazing 5th and 6th-grade students who just completed the epic House of Cards Makerspace Challenge! For weeks, our young engineers have been hard at work, tackling a truly challenging task: building the tallest, most stable tower possible using only TWO decks of cards and tape. The dedication and perseverance they showed were truly inspiring! There were countless attempts, lots of deconstruction, and even more redesigns as they worked to perfect their prototypes. They researched different construction methods, learned about the importance of tension and compression, and even explored the crucial role of a truss in building strong structures. After weeks of hard work and creative problem-solving, we have our champions! A massive round of applause for Avery, Lilly, and Grace, whose incredible tower soared to a winning height of 52 inches! That's right, 52 inches of pure card and tape engineering brilliance! This challenge wasn't just about building a tower; it was about fostering critical thinking, collaboration, and resilience. Seeing these students experiment, learn from their mistakes, and ultimately succeed was truly remarkable. We're so proud of all their efforts!

A Book Club party was held last night at the HN Public LIbrary in Dunkirk. Students made crafts, played games, enjoyed pizza and cookies, and spent time looking through the library collection and selecting books. Thank you to Becky Coker and the HN Public Library for allowing us to have this fun evening in their new addition!

Mrs. Mast's class is wrapping up their fossil unit in Science with some hands-on learning. Today they excavated fossils using small tools like a paleontologist. They each found a different fossil; some examples were shells, shark teeth, and sand dollars.
