Hardin Northern Class of 1969
Susan Kyle Arn graduated from Hardin Northern High School in 1969. In 1973 she received her Bachelor of Science degree at The Ohio State University. She finished her master’s degree work at the University of Oklahoma in 1977.
Susan was a physical education major at Ohio State as well as a member of the varsity Volleyball and Track and Field teams. She was the first female inducted into the Ohio State Physical Education Honor Society in 1972. She began her teaching career in North Carolina where she taught Health and PE, and she taught Math, Biology, and P.E. in Georgia. In 1976, she began her graduate work at the University of Oklahoma and then spent 36 years teaching in inner city schools in the Oklahoma City area. Susan became a nationally recognized Math educator during her career. She was Teacher of the Year at Capitol Hill High School more than once. In addition to teaching at Capitol Hill, she coached girls basketball, softball and track, as well as girls and boys tennis and swimming.
In 1998 Susan received the Ohio State University School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation Alumni Award for significant achievement in education of youth in the community. Susan was in the first group of Oklahoma educators to receive her National Teacher Certification from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards for Adolescence and Young Adulthood Mathematics. In 1999, Susan received the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. Susan started the first Math program at Metro Technology Centers in the fall of 1999. In 2002 and 2004 she completed 130 hours of training in the Principles of Engineering and Design at the Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, New York and she co-founded the Pre-Engineering program at Metro Tech. She taught pre-engineering for 5 years and was the first sponsor of the First Robotics team in Oklahoma. Susan authored many articles for professional journals including Techniques Magazine in 2006 on incorporating games into teaching math. Her article “Professional Journaling and Organization” was published in the 2004 Empowering the Beginning Teacher of Mathematics. Susan wrote and received multiple grants including one that allowed her to study High Crosses and Round Towers in Ireland. She served as leader for her local American Federation of Teachers union and was a union member for 36 years. Upon her retirement in 2013, Susan became the only teacher at Metro Tech to ever receive the Metro Quest Excellence Superintendent’s Award.
Susan has been an active community volunteer with Meals on Wheels and local school mentoring programs. She serves as a lay leader of her church in Norman, Oklahoma where she has lived since moving to Oklahoma in 1976. Susan is a 24-year breast cancer survivor and has been an inspiration to so many breast cancer survivors in her community. Susan stays connected with many of her former students and colleagues and regularly attends gatherings and Little League games of their kids. She repeatedly tells people that while she did not remain in Ohio as an adult, her education at Hardin Northern had a profound impact on her life. She has always said that teaching was her forever mission work and has done it better than anyone could have ever imagined.
