The varsity boy’s basketball team started off their season with a win against Mansfield Temple Christian on Friday at the Hopewell-Loudon Tip-Off Classic. Even though the Bears only won the game by 2 points, they played a hard fought game and ended up placing second in the tournament.

Hardin Northern scored the first two points of the game and stayed ahead during the first quarter. During the second quarter the team fell behind and went into half-time trailing behind their opponents. At the beginning of the third quarter, the Bears made several shots to put them in the lead, but only by a little. Even though the team was under tremendous amounts of pressure during the fourth quarter, they continued to play hard and ended up defeating Mansfield Temple Christian by a score of 37-35.

Coach Thomas said, “The win was important for our team because we were able to see the impact of our preseason hard work.”

Near the end of the game, all of the fans got on their feet to cheer on the Bears since they were only ahead by two points. It was great to see so much support and excitement coming from Hardin Northern fans and the team greatly appreciated the support. When the game ended and the Polar Bears ended up winning the crowd went wild with excitement for the team’s first win of the season.

This year’s team is packed with strong senior leaders who carried the team to their victory. Zach Wilhelm contributed 20 points for the Polar Bears, Shawn Weihrauch led the team with 9 rebounds, Bradlee Watts had 5 steals for the Bears, and Ty Schiewe racked up 5 rebounds.

This year’s team has a lot of potential for the upcoming season and will hopefully have a very successful 2016-2017 season.
